Project
Connecting Higher Education and Scientific Research

Illumen worked with Historically Black Colleges and Universities such as Howard University and Morgan State University to build a platform that helps bridge access to federal research opportunities and strengthen their role in the nation’s scientific mission.

The system is a key resource for institutions navigating funding pathways, program requirements, and partnership opportunities.

Illumen’s forward-deployed engineers worked closely with NIH teams to redesign core data structures, archival processes, and indexing logic, improving both reliability and long-term stewardship of institutional records. We have improved navigation, streamlined submission workflows, and enhanced accessibility features to align with NIH standards and reduce barriers for new users. We also delivered updated training materials and onboarding resources to help faculty and administrators confidently adopt the platform.

Our focus was on clarity, stability, and scalability, strengthening the foundation to better support HBCUs seeking to expand research capacity and compete for federal funding. The result is a more intuitive, resilient system that empowers institutions, broadens participation, and advances NIH’s mission to foster a more inclusive and innovative research ecosystem.
